Archaeological Site of Nalanda Mahavihara

Nalanda was an esteemed center of learning and Buddhist scholarship for over 800 years. The ruins cover an area of 23 hectares and include stupas, viharas (monastic dormitories), chaityas (temples), and ancient sculptures. One of the prominent structures is the Sariputra Stupa, built in honor of Buddha’s disciple. The site’s architectural design reflects a shift from the traditional stupa-based layout to a more structured learning complex. The ancient library, destroyed during invasions, once housed thousands of manuscripts. Today, visitors can explore the vast ruins, understanding their historical significance through guided tours and museum exhibits.
