An iconic 7th–8th century Dravidian-style temple renowned for its apsidal (semi-circular) design and exquisite Chalukyan carvings.
Durga Temple

The Durga Temple stands as Aihole’s most celebrated monument, showcasing the architectural brilliance of the Early Chalukyas. Despite its name, it isn’t dedicated to Goddess Durga but derives the name from “Durg,” meaning fortress, as it once stood within a fort enclosure. The temple’s distinctive apsidal (Gajaprasta) plan and its intricate carvings of deities like Vishnu, Shiva, and Durga on the pillars make it one of the earliest experiments in temple architecture that later influenced structures across South India.

The sanctum, circumambulatory path, and pillared galleries offer a living museum of early Hindu temple evolution.
