Khajuraho Temples

The Khajuraho Temples, located in Madhya Pradesh, are one of the finest examples of medieval Indian architecture and intricate stone carvings. Built by the Chandela dynasty between the 9th and 12th centuries, these temples are renowned for their exquisite sculptures, which depict various aspects of life, including divine deities, mythical creatures, celestial beings, and human emotions. The temples are primarily divided into three groups—Western, Eastern, and Southern—with the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple being the most prominent. The temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are particularly famous for their erotic carvings, which symbolize the tantric traditions and the spiritual journey of human desires leading to divine consciousness. Despite popular belief, only a small portion of the carvings depict such themes; the majority represent art, culture, and spirituality.
