National War Memorial

The National War Memorial (NWM) in New Delhi is a solemn tribute to India's fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives in wars and military operations since independence. Located near India Gate, this memorial was inaugurated on 25th February 2019 and stands as a symbol of valor, sacrifice, and patriotism.

Unlike India Gate, which commemorates soldiers of British India in World War I, the National War Memorial is India’s official tribute to soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces.

Key Highlights of the Memorial

1. Amar Chakra (Circle of Immortality)

At the heart of the memorial stands the eternal flame, symbolizing the undying spirit of Indian soldiers. Unlike the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, which was merged with this memorial in 2022, this flame now represents the sacrifices of all fallen warriors.

2. Veerta Chakra (Circle of Bravery)

This section showcases six bronze murals depicting heroic battles fought by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. It highlights famous military operations like:

• Battle of Longewala (1971 Indo-Pak War)
• Operation Meghdoot (Siachen Conflict, 1984)
• Kargil War (1999)

3. Tyag Chakra (Circle of Sacrifice)

Walls inscribed with 25,942+ names of soldiers who laid down their lives in wars, counter-terrorism operations, and UN peacekeeping missions. This circle is reminiscent of memorials like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the USA.

4. Rakshak Chakra (Circle of Protection)

Surrounding the complex is a green belt of trees representing the soldiers who protect the nation, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere.

5. Param Yodha Sthal

This area features bronze busts of 21 Param Vir Chakra (PVC) awardees, India’s highest military honor for valor. Learn about their bravery and heroic tales through interactive digital kiosks.

6. Multimedia & Museum Experience

• Digital displays and interactive screens narrating India’s military history
• Augmented reality exhibits and touchscreens explaining battles and operations
• Thematic light and sound show in the evening

Best Time to Visit

• Morning (8 AM – 10 AM): Less crowded, ideal for reflection and quiet walks
• Evening (5 PM – 8 PM): Best for experiencing lighting effects and Change of Guard ceremony
