Salar Jung Museum

The Salar Jung Museum is one of India’s most famous and largest museums, housing an incredible collection of art, antiques, manuscripts, and artifacts from across the world. It is located on the banks of the Musi River in Hyderabad and is a treasure trove of history, culture, and artistic brilliance.

History & Significance

The museum was originally the private collection of Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, also known as Salar Jung III, the former Prime Minister of Hyderabad. Over decades, he gathered an extraordinary collection of rare artifacts from India, Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia. After his death in 1949, the Government of India took charge of his collection, and the museum was officially opened to the public in 1951. Today, it is maintained by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
