Your Guide to Exploring Velankanni

Velankanni is a small town on the Coromandel Coast, widely known for the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, often referred to as the “Lourdes of the East.” The shrine has a strong reputation for miraculous healings, and pilgrims visit throughout the year, many offering prayers barefoot or carrying symbolic offerings. The church complex is well-organized with prayer halls, accommodation facilities, and multilingual services.

Apart from its religious importance, Velankanni has a quiet coastal setting with access to Velankanni Beach. The town becomes extremely crowded during the annual feast (late August to early September), when lakhs of devotees gather. Outside peak times, it remains relatively calm, making it easier to explore nearby places like Nagapattinam, Tranquebar (Tharangambadi), and other coastal heritage spots.
