Chadar Trek

Chadar Trek is one of the most iconic and challenging winter treks in India, taking place over the frozen Zanskar River in the remote Zanskar Valley, Ladakh. The trek spans approximately 105 km, typically covered over 9–12 days, depending on pace and route. Hikers experience extreme sub-zero temperatures, ice formations, and dramatic frozen landscapes. The trek is only possible during the peak winter months, when the river freezes completely, forming the “Chadar” (sheet of ice).

The trek passes through remote villages like Nerak, Shingra, and Lingshed, offering trekkers a glimpse of the Zanskar culture, Buddhist monasteries, and traditional lifestyles untouched by modernity. Wildlife sightings are occasional, with snow leopards, blue sheep, and Himalayan foxes being rare but possible encounters. Trekkers often camp along the frozen river, navigating narrow ice paths, making this trek both physically demanding and thrilling.

Due to its extreme conditions, Chadar Trek requires thorough preparation. Proper winter gear, acclimatization in Leh, and hiring experienced guides or trekking companies are mandatory. Medical precautions, especially for frostbite and altitude sickness, are crucial. Trekkers should also be aware of sudden weather changes and possible river cracks. Despite the challenges, the surreal frozen landscape, icy cliffs, and unique cultural encounters make Chadar Trek an unforgettable adventure.
