Swamimalai Murugan Temple

Swamimalai Murugan Temple, officially known as Arulmigu Swaminatha Swamy Temple, is one of the Arupadai Veedu (six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan), located in Swamimalai near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. The temple is built on a small artificial hill, and devotees climb 60 steps, symbolizing the 60 Tamil years, to reach the sanctum.

The temple holds deep mythological importance as it is believed that Lord Murugan taught the meaning of the sacred “Om” (Pranava mantra) to his father, Lord Shiva, earning the name Swaminatha (Teacher of Shiva). The temple architecture follows the Dravidian style, with a well-structured layout where the base houses shrines of Shiva and other deities, while Murugan’s sanctum is at the top. It is a key pilgrimage site in the Kumbakonam temple circuit, often visited along with other nearby temples.
