Mehrauli Archaeological Park

Mehrauli Archaeological Park, located in South Delhi, is a vast 200-acre historical site that houses over 100 heritage monuments spanning different dynasties, including the Delhi Sultanate, Mughal Empire, and British era. Often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Qutub Minar, this park offers a fascinating mix of tombs, mosques, stepwells, and ruins, making it a must-visit for history lovers and photographers.

Some of the most notable structures within the park include:

• Balban’s Tomb – The 13th-century tomb of Ghiyas-ud-din Balban, the first ruler to introduce true arch and dome architecture in India.
• Jamali Kamali Mosque & Tomb – A beautifully decorated 16th-century mosque with Indo-Islamic architecture, named after the Sufi poet Shaikh Jamali and his companion Kamali.
• Rajon Ki Baoli – A spectacular 16th-century stepwell, once used by kings and travelers.
• Metcalfe’s House (Dilkhusha) – A colonial-era structure built by the British officer Sir Thomas Metcalfe, who transformed Mughal ruins into a pleasure retreat.
• Quli Khan’s Tomb – A Mughal-era tomb that was later converted into a guest house by the British.

The park is best explored in the morning or late afternoon, especially in winter, as the area gets hot during midday. It is a hidden gem, offering serene landscapes, lesser crowds, and a mix of nature and history, perfect for leisurely walks, photography, and exploration.
