Shree Jagannatha Temple

Shree Jagannatha Temple, located in the sacred city of Puri, Odisha, is one of the most significant and ancient temples in India. Built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, the temple is an architectural marvel of the Kalinga style, characterized by its majestic shikhara (tower), intricately carved structures, and rich cultural heritage. The temple complex houses over 120 smaller shrines and is surrounded by a massive 20-foot-high wall known as Meghanada Pacheri.

The temple is most famous for the Rath Yatra, a grand chariot festival where the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra are placed on massive, elaborately decorated chariots and pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets of Puri. The festival attracts millions of pilgrims and visitors from all over the world.

What Can Be Seen Inside the Temple?

1. Main Sanctum (Garbhagriha) – The central sanctum houses the idols of Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra, along with the celestial wheel (Sudarshan Chakra). These deities are made of sacred Neem wood and are uniquely replaced every 12-19 years in a secret ritual known as Nabakalebara.
2. Mukhashala (Porch) – This is the outer hall leading to the sanctum, where priests conduct daily rituals and offerings.
3. Nata Mandap (Dancing Hall) – A beautifully carved pillared hall where temple dancers (Devadasis) used to perform sacred dances in honor of Lord Jagannath.
4. Bhoga Mandap (Offerings Hall) – This hall is where the famous Mahaprasad (sacred food offering) is prepared and served. The temple’s kitchen is considered the largest in the world, cooking over 56 varieties of Mahaprasad daily in earthen pots over wood-fired ovens.
5. Rohini Kund – A sacred water tank inside the temple complex associated with several spiritual beliefs.
6. Minor Shrines – The temple complex consists of many smaller shrines dedicated to various deities, including Lakshmi, Bimala, Ganesh, and Hanuman (Daria Mahavir).

• Silent Sea: While standing at the temple's Singhadwara (main entrance), the sound of ocean waves is mysteriously not heard, but as you step out, the sound returns.
• Mahaprasad Cooking: The food is cooked in seven earthen pots stacked on top of each other, and surprisingly, the topmost pot gets cooked first.
