Badrinath Temple is one of the four sacred sites of the Char Dham Yatra and also one of the 108 Divya Desams of Vaishnavism. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the form of Badri Narayan. The present structure is believed to have been established in the 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya, although it has undergone multiple renovations due to avalanches and natural damage over centuries.
The temple stands on the banks of the Alaknanda River, surrounded by Nar and Narayan mountain ranges. The main idol is a black stone (Shaligram) image of Vishnu in a meditative posture. The temple opens annually around April–May (Akshaya Tritiya) and closes around October–November (around Diwali), depending on weather conditions. During winter, the idol is shifted to Joshimath for worship.
